Should I get a Friend for my Tortoise?

Tortoises live well on their own and do not need a companion. In fact, as the tortoises begin to get older, they can become aggressive towards eachother. Fighting may not just harm your tortoises, but it can cause serious injury and death is a possibility. If you were to keep tortoises together, however, a male and a female are better off. This can still prove to be a bad pair as the male will continuously try to mate with the female causing distress. If you have the space, tortoises can get along with eachother, you just need to be careful. Housing maybe 2 or 3 tortoises together with a large enclosure can be possible but it does require a large space and a spare enclosure. If fighting occurs, you must seaperate the group all together.

Tortoises can be quite territorial. For instance, when going to bed, one tortoise may tend to push the other (or one of the others) out thus causing arguaments. You could end up with two males which usually leads to fighting. However, if you do end up with a male and female, you could also have lots of babies! As I said, tortoises can live together happily, but you don't really want to risk anything without the knowledge and extra space. Therefore, make sure you do your research before purchasing a friend for your tortoise. Tortoises get along best as babies but you can't actually determine their sex withut them being bigger. Therefore, you may end up with two males and a lot of arguments and fighting.

Buying a friend for your tortoise can also be a bit costly. You have to buy more of everything and possible even a new set up and definitely a larger one or extend your existing enclosure. I personally think that housing one is easier and cheaper and your tortoise is perfectly fine on their own but make sure you do your research if you're still unsure.
